Volvo has officially announced a new variant of the EX30, and it will be called the EX30 Cross Country. It’s an off-road-ready version of the electric crossover, set to join the ranks of lifted road cars like the Subaru Outback or even the Crosstrek. Even better, a launch date has already been disclosed, and it’s happening quite soon.

Interestingly, the official announcement’s accompanying image didn’t include any shadowy teaser of the upcoming SUV, or any car for that matter, but that’s fine. Volvo’s official confirmation came only a few days after an undisguised prototype was spotted by our spies while doing winter testing. And aptly so, as the EX30 Cross Country is being marketed as a perfect getaway vehicle to Volvo’s home country, Sweden.
Previous Spy Shots Left Nothing To Imagination
Based on the vehicle we saw before, the upcoming EX30 Cross Country will be taller than the standard EX30, appearing like it’s equipped with a lifted suspension. The wheels are different, too, though the prototype we saw could wear blacked-out placeholders and not actual production rims. What we observed, however, was the tires’ thicker sidewalls, meant for more rubber that should be quite fitting for off-road applications.

Meanwhile, the blacked-out nose with a topographical map motif should be the most obvious sign that this isn’t your run-of-the-mill EX30, plus the basket on the roof should add more utility to the outdoorsy owners who plan to go off-the-grid with their EV. Other details are still scarce at this point, but we’re sure there will be a Cross Country badge right where the black roof meets the painted panel by the C-pillar.
Volvo’s Hosting An Unusual Online Launch
While we don’t have details about the EX30 Cross Country’s powertrain, we’re quite sure Volvo’s going for a two-motor setup, so it will have an all-wheel drivetrain. The US-spec EX30 Twin Motor Performance, the quickest Volvo ever, produces up to 428 horsepower while offering up to an EPA-estimated range of 253 miles on a single charge of its 65 kWh (usable) battery. We expect a lower range for the rugged model given the change in tires and expected heavier weight for the add-ons.

Volvo said that the EX30 Cross Country’s launch is happening on February 10, 2025, at 7 AM EST. To amplify the vehicle’s adventure-ready demeanor, the Swedish automaker is hosting a livestream for its debut, which will include a virtual “trip to the rugged landscapes of Swedish Lapland.”
