Volkswagen has given its smallest SUV, the Taos, a mid-cycle refresh for MY2025. The popular crossover arrives for the new model year with sharper styling influenced by the electric ID models, a revised four-cylinder engine, and a new transmission for all-wheel drive models. As one of Volkswagen’s best-selling vehicles in North America, the latest batch of upgrades must keep the Taos feeling and looking fresh. Let’s find out if Volkswagen has succeeded.
The Taos retains its turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, but Volkswagen has made some revisions to the motor. For a start, the powerplant is now equipped with a modified turbo housing, a bigger intercooler, a new gasoline particulate filter, and updated piston rings and fuel injectors. The result is 16 additional horsepower, for a total of 174 hp. VW hasn’t shared gas mileage figures, but the outgoing front-wheel drive Taos managed an EPA-estimated 28/36/31 mpg on the city/highway/combined cycles.
Updated Styling Gives The 2025 Taos A More Upmarket Look
Aside from the more powerful engine, Volkswagen has replaced the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with an eight-speed automatic gearbox on 4Motion variants. Those are all the mechanical changes that have been made, but VW has also given the Taos a more modern look inside and out.

Much like the facelifted 2025 Jetta lineup, the Taos benefits from a modernized front fascia that brings it more in line with models like the new Tiguan and the ID.7 sedan, the latter of which has been delayed in America. The 2025 Taos has a new front bumper and radiator grille, along with standard LED projector headlights. Customers can also opt for a light bar for the front end. Round back, the Volkswagen badge is now illuminated, while the taillights are connected by an upmarket light bar.
Four Taos Trims To Choose From
For 2025, the Taos will be available in three new colors, namely Bright Moss Green, Monterey Blue Pearl, and Monument Gray, and customers can choose from four trims, all of which are available with front- or all-wheel drive.
2025 Volkswagen Taos Trims
Design-wise, the trims are differentiated with different wheel designs. Front-wheel drive S and SE models receive new 17- and 18-inch alloys, while the SEL gets 19-inch wheels. The SE Black trim (introduced last year) gets 18- (FWD) or 19-inch wheels (AWD), and a black-colored roof, among other things.
Updated Interior, Safety Features, And Availability
There are more revisions inside. For 2025, the Taos receives a new dashboard design, with updated materials and colors. As standard, all models receive an eight-inch infotainment display, with touch-operated Climatronic included on SE models and above. S grades receive two-tone black/grey cloth seats, while the SE and SE Black receive CloudTex/cloth upholstery. The SEL gains leather seats, available in dark blue or black/grey.
The Taos is packed full of driver-assist features, which include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, front/rear park distance control, a blind-spot monitor, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and more. Volkswagen says the 2025 Taos will reach dealerships by the end of 2024. Pricing has yet to be announced, but the current model has a starting price of $23,995. Even if the new model is slightly pricier, we expect the new Taos to remain an exceptional value for money package.
