Apple announced the iMac with an M4 chip designed to handle AI tasks better and with USB-C, and Apple Intelligence is now available for iPhone 15 & 16 running iOS 18.1, iPads with A17 or later chips, and Macs with M1 or later.
It seems Apple Drop Week has started. Today, the company announced the new M4 iMacs and the availability of Apple Intelligence, but with the announcements, there weren’t many surprises.
Starting with the M4 iMac, the all-in-one computer system received the updates that were most expected, including the new M4 chip, which is available in 8- or 10-core configurations. The 24-inch iMac did get new nano-texture glass to help reduce glare on the screen, and it has a new 12MP Center Stage camera. It also has 16GB of memory that can be boosted to 32GB and a 256GB SSD that can be increased to 2TB.
Apple’s press release details the new M4 iMac’s speed and processing increases over the M1 version, including up to 2X higher frame rates, 2.1X faster photo and video editing, and 1.5X faster browsing in Safari.
The base model M4iMac has two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, while all the other configurations have 4 Thunderbolt 4 ports and Gigabit Ethernet capabilities. The base model also comes with the Magic Keyboard without Touch ID, and the other configurations all have the Touch ID feature. All versions come in several new colors, including blue, purple, pink, orange, yellow, green, and silver with matching Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad.
Accompanying the new M4 iMac introduction, Apple also announced the availability of Apple Intelligence to iPhone 15 and 16 models running iOS 18.1, as well as iPads with A17 or later chips and Macs with M1 or later (including this newest iMac). The features that are currently available for Apple Intelligence include systemwide writing tools, Siri improvements, AI in Mail, Notes, and the Phone apps, AI in the Photos app, and more. Apple also promised more Apple Intelligence features (including additional languages) are coming in December.
The new M4 iMac is available for pre-order today, with shipping and general availability expected to start on November 8. The 8-Core iMac is $1299 and the 10-Core iMac starts at $1499.
