This upgrade is small in name but delivers useful hardware changes that translate to sharper photos and faster gaming.
Nothing is expanding its smartphone lineup with the Phone (2a) Plus. It’s only been a few months since Nothing released the Phone (2a), but apparently, it was enough time to introduce upgraded hardware and an AI-powered news feed that’s, strangely, read aloud by the company’s CFO.
There are also some new colors: metallic Grey and an updated Black. Unfortunately, US customers are stuck with Grey only.
Compared to the Phone (2a), the biggest changes in the Phone (2a) Plus are the camera and the chip. Its predecessor’s 32 MP selfie camera has been upgraded to 50 MP, meaning it can capture more detailed images. The triple-camera system supports HDR and 4K video recording.
This phone comes with the MediaTek Dimensity 7350 Pro 5G processor. With a 3.0 GHz clock speed, Nothing says it’s 10 percent faster than the 2.8 GHz Phone (2a) that’s powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro. It’s supported by an ARM Mali-G610 MC4 GPU for 30 percent faster gaming.
Additionally, the Plus model supports quicker wired charging speeds, at 50W instead of 45W. In just under 20 minutes, the phone can be juiced up for all-day use. This means it charges about 10 percent faster than the Phone (2a). It should last two days on a full charge.
The Phone (2a) Plus ships with the Android 14-powered Nothing OS 2.6. The big news here is the introduction of an AI-powered news reporter. It delivers curated news through the News Reporter Widget and even reads the articles aloud using Nothing CFO Tim Holbrow’s voice. The widget supports eight genres, including science and entertainment, and can be downloaded on all Nothing phones through the Nothing Widgets app.
The $399 Phone (2a) Plus is available via the US Beta Program starting August 7. This gets you 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.
