New Macs aren’t unexpected, but the release of several new ones could mean Apple is putting M4 chips in the entire line.
With Apple’s fall launch approaching, lots of rumors are swirling about what might be coming. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the rest of the Apple computer lineup could get the new M4 chip either this fall or in the spring.
In his regular Apple rumor column, Gurman said Apple is planning several new Macs for later this year—MacBook Pros, the iMac desktop, and the Mac mini. He also mentioned that new MacBook Airs, Mac Pros, and Mac Studios are planned for next year. All are designed to bring the Apple computer lineup current to the M4 processor, which has the company’s new AI features. Gurman points out that this will be the first time the company has had the same generation chip in all of its computers.
Most notably, Gurman focused on the new Mac mini that’s expected to make an appearance at Apple’s fall event. Gurman said his inside sources at Apple shared information about the features of the new mini, including it’s size, which is expected to more closely resemble the size of the Apple TV set-top box. That would make it small enough to put in the palm of your hand, although Gurman does seem to think that the mini will be thicker than it currently is.
Gurman’s sources also revealed that the new Mac Mini will capitalize on the lower power requirements of Apple silicon so “it’s esentially an iPad Pro in a small box.” What that means for functionality is yet to be seen.
Current versions of the Mac mini start at $599, and it’s unlikely that the price will decrease, even though the new mini may be cheaper to produce.
