Musicians and songwriters will soon have more more creative and commercial opportunities across Meta’s various platforms.
Meta—then Facebook—was one of the first social media platforms to create licensing agreements with Universal Music Group and Universal Music Publishing Group in 2017. Now, the company is expanding that agreement further.
In a press release on Monday, Meta announced an expanded agreement with Universal Music Group and Universal Music Publishing Group “to address, among other things, unauthorized AI-generated content that could affect artists and songwriters.” The efforts appear to be cross-platform for all of Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Horizon, Threads, and WhatsApp.
Meta explained that the new agreement would also increase the monetization opportunities available to artists and songwriters by adding short-form videos to the mix. Meta has also licensed music specifically for use with WhatsApp, which is a first for Meta.
“This partnership builds on the recognition that music can help connect us and bring fans, artists, and songwriters closer together, not only on established platforms such as Instagram and Facebook, but also in new ways on WhatsApp, and more. We’re extremely grateful to the Universal team, and look forward to growing our partnership in the future.” Tamara Hrivnak, VP Music and Content Business Development at Meta, said in the press release.
