Google’s Pixel 9 range gets new hardware, as expected, but also some really helpful AI tools.
The rumored Pixel 9 was revealed today. Google announced four new phones during the keynote: Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
The phones are available for pre-order today. The Pixel 9 will begin shipping on August 22, while the Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold will start shipping on September 4. Prices range from $799 for the standard model to $1799 for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Google will toss Google Store credit for anyone who pre-orders one of the Pro or Pro Fold phones.
One of the most notable physical changes in this year’s Pixels is the camera bar. Compared to its predecessor, the camera housing is more compact, more round, and doesn’t quite fill the width of the phone. The Pixel 9 Pro XL’s triple rear cameras include a 48 MP telephoto sensor and a 42 MP selfie camera (the Pixel 8 Pro uses a 10.5MP selfie camera). Google’s Pro-level Pixels also support 8K recording via Video Boost (videos are shot in 4K and then upscaled using AI).
Screen sizes are changing his year. The base model and Pixel 9 Pro are 6.3 inches, which is larger than the Pixel 8’s 6.2-inch screen but smaller than the 6.7-inch Pixel 8 Pro. Instead, there’s a new 6.8-inch Pixel 9 Pro XL. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold unfolds to a large 8-inch display (an increase from the original’s 7.6-inch screen). These phones are equipped with a 120 Hz display and the Pro models have a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, a bump from the Pixel 8 Pro’s 1600 nits.
The Pixel 9 is powered by Google’s Tensor G4 chip. The Pixel 9 Pro models now include 16 GB of RAM and are available in sizes that range from 128 GB to 1 TB. The base model has more RAM, too, but the 12 GB of memory is paired with only up to 256 GB of storage.
The Pixel 9 phones will ship with Android 14 but can be upgraded to Android 15 as soon as it’s released later in the year. In addition to the inclusion of satellite messaging are several new AI tools. These include Add Me and Best Take for Photoshopping yourself into group photos and capturing the best shot from a collection. There’s also Zoom Enhance for viewing sharpened details even after a photo has been taken, and Pixel Screenshots to simplify finding screenshots among the hundreds on your phone.
