This new e-ink device is small, lightweight, and gives you the freedom of the Google Play Store for apps.
I’m a sucker for anything reading-related. So when the news of a new e-reader crossed my desk, I was instantly hooked.
Boox shared a press release with Lifewire announcing the newest edition of its e-reading devices, the Boox Go 6. As the name implies, it’s a 6-inch e-ink e-reader, similar to the Kindle Paperwhite. It’s similarly priced at $150, but the similarities end here.
Boox Go 6 is a 6-inch reader, but because that’s measured diagonally, the actual device is 5.8 inches by 4.3 inches. That makes it slightly shorter but wider than many of today’s smartphones. And while it has the latest Carta 1300 e-ink screen, it’s also only .27 inches thick and weighs 2 ounces less than Amazon’s device. All this means it should fit nicely into a pocket, or in my case, in an easy-to-access part of my backpack so I can grab it when I’m traveling. It will likely also be more comfortable to hold than my Kindle Paperwhite.
What really sets the Boox Go 6 apart, though, is that it operates on an open Android operating system and has the Google Play Store preinstalled. Boox does include the NeoReader app on the device, which opens up to 20 document formats and has its own reading features. But if you, like me, are an avid Kindle fan, the Google Play Store means you can download the Kindle app on the Boox Go 6 and still have access to your entire library.
The ability to download apps from the Google Play Store means I could also add audio and web browsing apps. Technically, I could probably also add video apps like YouTube, but I’m not sure I see any attraction to watching videos on an e-ink screen.
I can’t wait to get my hands on this little device. You can bet I’ll be ordering it from the Boox website, or Amazon—since Boox’s other tablets are listed there—very soon.
