STEM workers in the Southeast might want to consider moving north or west.
No one is surprised when you say that the Southeast has the lowest pay rates of any region in the US for people working in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) careers, and now there’s solid data to prove it.
CYTENA sent the study findings to Livewire via email, showing the disparity between salaries in the Southeast and the rest of the US. The company analyzed Glassdoor’s average salary data for over 75 jobs in STEM fields and found that Mississippi fell to the bottom of the list with an average annual income of $85,382. By contrast, the state with the highest average STEM income was California at $124,937.
While these findings are no surprise, it bears mentioning that in the five highest-paid states—California, Washington, New York, Nevada, and Maryland—the top salaries go to healthcare workers like surgeons and anesthesiologists. So, it’s safe to assume that the highest-paid jobs in the five states with the lowest average income also go to people in healthcare-related fields.
That means employees in tech-related fields in the five states at the bottom of the list—Iowa, Alabama, West Virginia, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi—likely get paid less than the salary average for those states. Seems like a good indication that anyone wanting to pursue a career in tech might need to consider moving north or west to ensure a higher salary.
