As we become more reliant on AI, these glasses offer a creative solution for people who want to maintain their privacy.
The rise of artificial intelligence has sparked all kinds of innovation, including products that cleverly use AI against itself, like NeuThrone’s new sunglasses, which are designed to offer style while protecting wearers from AI tools that attempt to copy human faces.
According to a press release sent to Lifewire, the VISIONARIES sunglasses use technology that disrupts AI’s ability to reproduce images. The company claims that more than 1 billion CCTV cameras take 14 trillion unauthorized photos of people globally. The images can then be fed into AI and used to create other images without your permission. In response, these sunglasses are designed to ‘poison’ AI algorithms; they confuse AI by introducing visual noise, making them incapable of copying your face. Otherwise, they look like a normal pair of sunglasses with square frames and gold accents.
The product’s link to modern societal concerns feels straight out of Black Mirror, where technology blurs the line between convenience and invasion of privacy. While NeuThrone’s approach isn’t entirely new—techniques like CV Dazzle have been around for over a decade—it stands out by blending fashion with a bold statement on privacy and control.
The sunglasses have “modern geometrical square frames.” They look like other sunglasses, with a molded bridge and gold accents, though available pictures make it difficult to see them clearly.
Introduced this week during New York Fashion Week, VISIONARIES will be available through an “exclusive auction” in October. The first pair will feature a lighter dose of deepfake camouflage compared to future models, but AI engineers will be put to work later this year to help develop more advanced camouflages.
