Holding on to an older iPhone can mean your phone bill reduces by $40 or more per month.
We recently shared information about why 63 percent of consumers say they won’t be upgrading to the newest iPhone, and it seems even now that the iPhone 16 is available to order, those sentiments are holding strong.
New research from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) explains why more consumers (about 67 percent) are holding onto their existing iPhones longer. There are a couple of reasons. The first is the condition of the phone. A two-year-old iPhone (in this case, that would make it an iPhone 14) is still very capable, so as long as the device is in good physical shape, many iPhone owners don’t see the need to upgrade.
Even the new Apple Intelligence features don’t seem to be enough to draw some people into upgrading, especially in the EU, where many of them won’t be available. “I have the 14 Pro, and I’ll probably skip the 16 series. The reason is that it’s still a rock-solid smartphone, everything runs fast and smoothly, and the cameras are great,” user JokerPower said in a MacRumors forum thread.
The condition of the phone isn’t the only reason why people are not planning to upgrade to the iPhone 16, though. CIRP suggests that money has a lot to do with it. Older phones that were purchased through a lease payment are often paid off, and the result is that “after their final payment many iPhone owners enjoy a decrease of $40 or more in their monthly cell phone expense,” CIRP wrote in the research overview.
Many consumers agree. “I just paid mine fully, I don’t want to finance another phone for along time. I am perfectly content with my 14 pro,” Reddit user Beerasaurus said in a thread about not upgrading to the newest device.
So, it seems the general consensus is that if your older phone still looks good and works well, you might as well continue using it and save yourself some money. But if you’re unsure if you should upgrade, our Should You Upgrade Your iPhone? decision guide might help.
