(KTLA) – An investigation is underway after a private jet was ordered to stop taxiing toward a departing Delta flight on an active runway at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday afternoon.
Video footage shared by Airline Videos Live shows the jet creeping toward the runway as the Delta aircraft takes off. An air traffic controller can be heard calling for the jet to “stop, stop, stop” as the Delta flight takes off.
The Embraer E135 jet that was ordered to stop taxiing had just arrived from Spokane, Washington, and carried the Gonzaga men’s college basketball team, as earlier reported by the Los Angeles Times. The flight was operated by Colorado-based Key Lime Air.
Both planes appeared to operate normally after the tense moment, the footage shows.
The FAA, in a statement, said the jet never actually crossed onto the active runway.
“Air traffic controllers directed Key Lime Air Flight 563 to hold short of crossing a runway at Los Angeles International Airport because a second aircraft was taking off from the runway at the time,” reads a statement shared by the FAA. “When the Embraer E135 jet proceeded to cross the hold bars, air traffic controllers told the pilots to stop. The jet never crossed the runway edge line.”
A spokesperson for Gonzaga University said the men’s team was not affected by the incident.
“We understand that the incident at LAX is under investigation and we will review this information as it becomes available,” the university said in an email Monday afternoon. “Our team members aboard the aircraft were unaware of the situation as it occurred and we are grateful that the incident ended safely for all.”
Gonzaga went on to play UCLA the following day, according to ESPN, losing to the Bruins 65-62.
