Key Takeaways
- Lucid Motors partners with the Academy of Art University to challenge design students.
- Resulting concept designs push the boundaries of mobility.
- Lucid designers will guide students throughout the project and evaluate the final designs.
Electric automaker Lucid Motors has partnered with the Academy of Art University – School of Industrial Design to foster the next generation of innovative car designers.
Over 90 days, students will be encouraged to create ‘out-the-box’ creations that stand out from the crowd and, importantly, embrace environmental design. Sustainability is one of the key elements of the project, with participants challenged to use eco-friendly materials and technologies. This aligns with Lucid’s own environmental endeavors and practices.
Senior members of the Lucid design team will oversee the project. They will guide students as they attempt to “conceive designs that transcend traditional notions of mobility” and reimagine the art of driving.
It’s rather apt that Lucid has partnered with the Academy of Art University. Lucid Designers Sean Wilson and Roberto Bautista graduated from the industrial design program. In contrast, Jenny Ha, a senior Lucid Air design team member, also taught at the institution.
Nurturing The Next Generation Of Great Designers
“We wholeheartedly believe in the transformative power of young, creative minds in pushing the boundaries of creative innovation.”
– Derk Jenkins, Senior Vice President of Design and Brand at Lucid.
He goes on to say that “this collaboration is a testament to our commitment to harnessing this energy and creativity. By challenging students to reimagine the future of mobility, we can unlock exciting new ideas in vehicle design, functionality, and sustainability, ensuring that we continue to lead in the creation of cutting-edge, luxury electric vehicles.”

A bunch of small changes add up in a big way.
Lucid designers will visit the Academy of Art throughout the project to converse and engage with students. Fledgling car stylists will receive invaluable feedback and assistance on their concepts, which will be made into clay models and 3D-printed prototypes at the end of the challenge. At this stage, Lucid design team members will evaluate the final pieces.
Lucid is not the only manufacturer that cultivates future designers. The Polestar Design Contest aims to do the same thing, with contestants creating incredible designs, such as the Polestar Synergy hypercar. In 2022, Lexus challenged students at the Royal College of Art to design their idea of future luxury
Gorgeous Coupe May Preview Future Lucid Sports Car
Based on the renderings, students are still keen on designing sporty-looking coupes. Designed by Jaichen (Justin) Xu, the Lucid Reimagined is a svelte GT car that features a unique pet-entry system, digital transparent doors, and an innovative cabin that can be configured to suit the owner’s needs.
It would be great to see Lucid create something like this, preferably with the 1,234-horsepower drivetrain in the tri-motor Air Sapphire super sedan, but we digress. Lucid is one of several automotive partners the Academy of Art has worked with. Previously, Audi, Pininfarina, Jeep, Jaguar, General Motors, and Volvo have collaborated with the school.
Based on the designs we’ve seen from other similar collaborations and this one, one thing is sure: the future of automotive design certainly won’t be boring.
