New Samsung folding phones with AI? Yes please.
Samsung showed off its latest flip and fold phones in Paris on Wednesday. The Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 each boast a slim, light form factor and an AI-optimized Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 “Mobile Platform for Galaxy” chip.
The company promises a symmetrical straight-edged design for both handsets and a new cover screen ratio on the Fold6 that should make it feel more like other non-folding flagship bar-style phones. Samsung also says its new Galaxy Z series phones are more durable than ever, with a redesigned dual rail hinge and a strengthened folding edge to distribute any shock forces from impact.
The company says the new phones are made with Armor Aluminum3 and Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 24 to further strengthen the devices. The Snapdragon chip is optimized for AI and offers “enhanced graphics,” according to Samsung. Better yet, the vapor chamber (for cooling) is bigger on the Z Fold6, and there’s now a vapor chamber on the Z Flip6, as well.
Galaxy Z Fold6
The Galaxy Z Fold6 gets AI-powered translation, summaries, and auto-formatting for meeting notes, and direct transcription, translation, and summaries of voice recordings right in Notes. You can open PDFs in there, too, translating text from the PDF, even the text in images and graphs. There’s a new Composer feature in the Samsung Keyboard that generates suggested text for email and social media, and it will analyze your previous social media texts to match your tone.
The new Interpreter app takes advantage of the dual screen setup of the Fold6, showing transcriptions and translation on the main and cover screen. You can also just translate one-way, too, for things like lectures or, say, mass transit announcements.
All of this is powered by Google’s Gemini AI, which is fully integrated in both the Fold6 and the Flip6. You’ll access it with a swipe in the corner of your screen or just saying, “Hey, Google.” Google’s Circle to Search is also available with these devices. The Fold6 will also have an AI-powered ProVisual Engine to let you manage advanced AI photo editing with Photo Assist, Instant Slow-mo for video, and the like.
Galaxy Z Flip6
The smaller, flip-up handset, Galaxy Z Flip6, gets a ton of fun new features as well, including an enhanced cover screen. This 3.4-inch super AMOLED FlexWIndow lets you reply to texts with AI suggestions that will use your previous messages as a model for your own tone. It will also provide access to Samsung Health updates and notifications and will let you manage the music you’re playing. There are plenty more Widgets coming to this screen, as well, and the new handset will let you check info from many of them at once.
Of course, you’ll want to change your wallpaper on that outer screen often, and the new AI-powered Photo Ambient will change it for you based on the time and weather. Samsung also promises a bigger battery and several AI-enhanced power management systems to keep your phone running longer.
There’s a new AutoZoom with the FlexCam setup on the Flip6, which will find the best framing for all your shots before you snap the picture. The Flip6 gets a 50MP Wide and 12MP Ultra-wide camera sensor, with 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom enhanced with AI.
The Galaxy Z Flip6 also has a new Nightography feature with video HDR to keep things crisp and clear. It even integrates with Instagram as an option when creating Stories in that social media app.
The Galaxy Z Fold6 starts at $1,899.99 and will come in Silver Shadow, pink, and navy blue. The Galaxy Z Flip6 will start at $1,099.99 and comes in Silver Shadow, yellow, blue, and mint colors. If you order via Samsung.com, you’ll have the option of Craft Black and Purity White for both handsets, or a peach-colored option for the Flip6.
The Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 are available for pre-order starting today, July 10, and will be released to general availability on July 24 at Amazon, Best Buy, Samsung.com, and various nationwide carriers.
