Get ready to see more ads in more places if you’re a Microsoft Windows user.
Everyone wants to see more ads, right? At least, that seems to be what Microsoft believes.
The company made that apparent in its scheduled Tuesday update, which included a new Recommendations section of the start menu that will show ‘recommended’ apps from “a small set of curated developers.” In other words, ads. The update, KB5036980, started rolling out on Tuesday, but it could take several days to a week for everyone to receive the update.
The start menu recommendations can be disabled if that’s not something you want to see. To disable them, you need to go to Settings > Personalization > Start. Then turn off the toggle for Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more.
The regular weekly update also included changes to the way your most frequently used apps will appear in the start menu. Now they may appear in the Recommended section of the menu, even if you do not have them pinned to the start menu.
Additional changes include updates to the Widgets icon and Widgets on the lock screen. Improvements have been made here to make the icon less blurry and improve the visuals and reliability of the Widgets on the lock screen.
Minor updates to functions (such as the onscreen Japanese keyboard and Settings) were also made to fix glitches and functions that didn’t work properly.
If you have not yet received the latest Windows update, you can manually update to the most current version from the Settings menu.
