A closer look at Texas A&M football’s next opponent, LSU
Tony Catalina sits down with The Daily Advertiser’s LSU beat reporter Cory Diaz to talk about the upcoming matchup between the Aggies and Tigers.
No. 14 Texas A&M football (6-1, 4-0) and ran roughshod over No. 7 LSU (6-1, 3-0) during the second half Saturday.
The Aggies were down 10 at halftime but dominated the latter quarters of play.
LSU had outgained the Aggies 283 to 147 and has tallied 11 first downs to A&M’s eight in the first two quarters. Then A&M outscored LSU, 24-6 to turn the tide. A jubilant Mike Elko was seen egging on the Kyle Field faithful from the sidelines as A&M lined up in victory formation.

Conner Weigman tallied just 64 passing yards on 6-of-18 attempts before giving way to Marcel Reed who exploded after the half. Reed ended the day with 62 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Texas A&M comes into the game having won six straight and both a rivalry win (vs. Arkansas) and a top-10 win (Missouri) on its resume. LSU has won six straight as well and boasts wins over Ole Miss and Arkansas in the last two weeks. Starting Aggies quarterback Conner Weigman is 1-0 against LSU in his career, with a win in 2022, 38-23. Grant Nussmeier has faced the Aggies one time as LSU’s quarterback but was a backup for last year’s 42-30 Tigers win.
Texas A&M vs LSU score updates
The Aggies kicker drills a 26-yard field goal to keep the pressure on as Kyle Field tilts toward pandemonium.
The Aggies have scored four consecutive touchdowns since Reed was inserted into the game, and as the midway point of the fourth quarter draws near, the Reed-led offense goes back up by double-digits with a four-play, 75-yard drive, 35-23.
After three unanswered touchdowns by the Aggies, the Tigers answer back with a scoring drive of their own to cut the lead back down to four. The nine-play, 78-yard drive was capped off by a one-yard plunge by Nussmeier, followed by a failed two-point try to cut the lead to 28-23.
Three drives, three touchdowns. The insertion of Marcel Reed at quarterback completely changed the game for the Aggies. His latest was from four yards out to give the Aggies a 28-17 lead.
Last offensive possession, the Aggies put in backup quarterback Marcel Reed, and he delivered on the first play for a touchdown. He followed that up with a seven-play, 60-yard drive, capped by a perfectly executed QB draw to give A&M its first lead of the game, 21-17.
All night long, the Aggies have struggled to find any type of rhythm. Looking for a play to spark them, defensive back BJ Mayes answers the call with an interception, setting up their offense at the LSU 8-yard line. Aggies bring in backup quarterback Marcel Reed, who takes the shotgun snap and cashes in with an 8-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 17-14.
The Aggies struggled with penalties, committing five in the first two quarters, while the defense allowed 7.6 yards per play, setting up A&M being down 17-7 after a messy first half of action.
A three-play drive is all it took for the Tigers to get its lead back to 10. Nussmeier finds wide receiver Aaron Anderson for 76 yards to push the lead to 17-7.
Falling behind two possessions, A&M needed to answer back to stop the game from getting out of hand. A nine-play, 75-yard drive capped by a Moss 7-yard touchdown run is exactly what they needed to tighten the Tigers lead to 10-7.
Aggies running back Le’Veon Moss caught a third-down check-down but fumbled, and LSU was there to scoop up the mistake. A&M added a 15-yard personal foul setting up the Tigers on the 21. LSU capitalized on the mistake with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Nussmeier to tight end Mason Taylor to extend its lead to 10-0.
Following punts from each offense, including a three-and-out by the Tigers, LSU found a rhythm on its second possession. It drove eight plays and 86 yards to add three points and take an early 3-0 lead.
