Apple’s new iPad Air isn’t just getting a better chip, it’s also getting a larger sized screen option.
The iPad Air we’ve been dreaming about was just announced by Apple.
At Apple’s May iPad Event on Tuesday, the company dropped a number of new iPad improvements, with the first announcement around changes to the iPad Air lineup. The new lineup now includes the 11-inch iPad Air with an M2 chip and a new 13-inch iPad Air, which also has the M2 chip, both of which also now have a front landscape camera.
The new iPad Air models feature a Liquid Retina Display, with an M2 chip that brings faster CPU, GPU, and neural processing to the platform. Aside from the larger size and faster processor, the most interesting change is the 12MP landscape front camera.
Apple says the new ultra-wide camera features Center Stage, which uses machine learning to keep the subject in the center of the frame during Facetime or video calls. The camera supports 4K video with support for 240-fps slo-mo recording and has dual landscape-oriented speakers for spatial audio capabilities. And the 13-inch iPad Air gets additional bass support for richer sound.
What you really want to know is how much this upgrade will cost, though, right? It’s pretty affordable. The 11-inch iPad Air starts at $599, while the 13-inch version will cost $799 for the base model. Apple did increase the starting storage levels, so now 128GB storage is the lowest tier, with options for 512GB or 1TB available.
Both the 11-inch iPad Air and the 13-inch iPad Air are available to order on Apple’s website today with general availability Wednesday, May 15. You also can choose to order your new iPad in a new blue or lavender color in addition to the more standard silver and gray options, and both will work with the newly announced Apple Pencil Pro.
