It’s been less than a year since comedian Nate Bargatze made his debut hosting “Saturday Night Live,” but the appearance was so well received that he’s back already, alongside a stacked lineup of Season 50 hosts that include Jean Smart, John Mulaney and Michael Keaton. Was it as strong a showing as last time? Not exactly. The monologue was more scattershot and less finely crafted than last year’s and the sketches were less uniformly great, but there was still some strong material. Bargatze’s every-guy vibe still fits “SNL” nicely, particularly in sketches where he’s playing with language, such as a sequel…
A Rivian R1T owner from North Carolina has recently discovered something cool about his electric truck – it can be submerged in deep muddy waters and survive. In a Facebook video uploaded by Joshua Vincent Sauer, the owner of the affected truck explained how the incident happened. According to the owner, he parked his truck across a U-haul facility near the Swannanoa River in Asheville, North Carolina, just as Hurricane Helene started to wreak havoc in the southeast region of the US. With waters rising due to the hurricane, the owner expected his truck to be unusable when he returned.…
The biggest clash in cosmology might be inching closer to resolution, thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope. Scientists disagree over the universe’s expansion rate, known as the Hubble constant. There are two main methods for measuring it — one based on exploding stars called supernovas and the other on the universe’s oldest light, the cosmic microwave background. The two techniques have been in conflict for a decade, in what’s known as the “Hubble tension” (SN: 3/21/14). If this tension is real, and not the result of an error in one of the measurements, it would demand a drastic shift in…
Among the more than 500 species of bacteria that thrive in the human mouth, one seems to play by its own rules. Rather than reproducing by splitting itself in two, like most bacteria do, Corynebacterium matruchotii divides into as many as 14 cells simultaneously, researchers report in the Sept. 10 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. This video shows one Corynebacterium matruchotii bacterium dividing into many daughter cells, which themselves immediately rapidly divide. No other known bacteria reproduces in this way, researchers say. The strategy may allow C. matruchotii to quickly monopolize the human mouth, where it typically resides.…
Extreme Climate Survey Science News is collecting reader questions about how to navigate our planet’s changing climate. What do you want to know about extreme heat and how it can lead to extreme weather events? Previous computer simulation-based reconstructions of temperatures during this span reported a range of about 14° C to 26° C. These temperature shifts, surprisingly, also closely tracked shifts in atmospheric carbon dioxide, eclipsing other factors such as changing solar irradiance in driving Earth’s temperatures. Researchers with Washington, D.C.’s Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History began piecing together the timeline in 2018 for the museum’s new “Deep…
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the leading candidate for his state’s Senate seat, said he would advise Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to strike Iranian ballistic missile factories. In an interview on NBC News’s “Meet the Press,” Schiff said such a response would be “proportionate” after Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles last week aimed at Israel. “If I were advising the Prime Minister of Israel, I would say, go after those ballistic missile factories storage areas,” Schiff said. “That would be proportionate, in my view,” Schiff continued. “But it would also help degrade Iran’s capacity.” President Biden said last…
