There appears to be trouble in paradise between the Green Bay Packers and Romeo Doubs. The veteran receiver was a non-participant in practice both Thursday and Friday, which has led to Doubs being suspended one game by the team for “negatively” impacting the team with his “decisions and actions.”Doubs was previously listed as doubtful for the club’s Week 5 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams due to personal reasons. Since that final injury report was released, there’s been more information that’s brought some clarity — albeit ominous clarity — to the situation. Doubs reportedly is upset with his role within the…

Volkswagen’s new ID.7 is seriously efficient. The German automaker took a new 2025 Volkswagen ID.7 for a leisurely drive around Switzerland that just wouldn’t end. The team behind the wheel covered nearly 500 miles on a single charge, spending a total of almost 16 hours behind the wheel of their big sedan. 15 hours and 42 minutes is a long time to spend behind the wheel, no matter what you’re doing. It’s even longer when you’re driving the same 50-mile loop of roads over and over again as you wait for the battery charge to trickle down to nothing. But…

Opposing fountains of plasma and particles spanning 23 million light-years are the longest pair of black hole jets ever seen. That’s far enough to influence the evolution of the universe on cosmic scales, astronomers report September 18 in Nature. “Traditionally, astronomers believed all jets remain within, or at least very close to, their host galaxy,” said astrophysicist Martijn Oei of Caltech in a news conference on September 16. “We present evidence that supermassive black holes don’t only hold sway over the galaxy, but also of the cosmic web that surrounds them.” Tell us about your Science News experience Help us…

Body size estimates of some of Earth’s larger-than-life species may have been just that: a little bit too large for real life.   Take Dunkleosteus, an armored fish with a powerful bite force that lived around 360 million years ago (SN: 7/17/18). It had long been thought to be as much as 10 meters long, based on the fossilized remains of its massive bony head. But the assumed head-to-body ratio used in that calculation might not have been correct. Instead, the fish was probably about half as long and much stouter, earning it the nickname “Chunkleosteus” from some researchers.  …

One of the most remarkable things about the human brain is that it changes. A lot. This ability to reinvent itself, to morph, to strengthen some connections and let others fall away, captivates Andrea Gomez. A molecular and cell biologist at the University of California, Berkeley, Gomez spends her time trying to figure out how the brain stays flexible, but not too flexible (SN: 7/27/12). The human brain operates on a knife’s edge, a slim, just-right compromise between flexibility and rigid structure, Gomez says. Too much plasticity would devolve into chaos. “We would never have a memory form. We would…

Dust pollution is known to contribute to asthma and heart and lung disease. But dust blowing from Utah’s Great Salt Lake could pack an extra unwanted punch. Metals in the dust and sediment from around Great Salt Lake are more reactive than dust from nearby lake beds, researchers report in the November Atmospheric Environment. When inhaled, the dust has the potential to cause inflammation, though the actual impacts to people in the area will require further study. Tell us about your Science News experience Help us improve by taking our 15-question reader survey. The Great Salt Lake has been steadily…

Former President Trump is returning Saturday to Butler, Pa., nearly three months after a bullet grazed his ear at the same site in an attempted assassination. “We never finished what we were supposed to do,” Trump told NewsNation last month, when announcing the rally. “And I said that I said that day when I was shot, I said, we’re coming back. We’re going to come back.” The July 13 shooting, which left one rallygoer dead and two others injured, upended the presidential campaign and, along with a second apparent assassination attempt on Trump last month, has thrust the Secret Service…
