BMW M3 GT race car
In preparation for next year’s DTM touring car race series BMW will be unveiling a new concept car previewing its M3 DTM race car that will compete in the 2012 season (current M3 GT race car pictured). The German automaker is returning to the series after an 18 year hiatus but is keen to show that it’s a force to be reckoned with.
The new M3 DTM race car concept will be revealed at a special event taking place at Munich’s Olympic Stadium on July 16 and 17, an event that will be hosted by BMW Motorsports’ new director Jens Marquardt, who takes over from Mario Theissen on July 1.
In recent months BMW has been working with the DTM umbrella organization ITR e.V. and the other manufacturers represented in the series, including close rivals Mercedes-Benz and Audi, on issues relating to the future technical regulations, and the long-term internationalization of the championship.
BMW will be represented with three teams in the DTM in 2012: BMW Team Schnitzer, BMW Team RBM and BMW Team RMG.
Development of the actual M3 DTM race car, meanwhile, has been in full flow since BMW announced its DTM comeback in October of last year, and has so far run to plan, according to the automaker. The first tests are expected to start in the following months.
