This thermostat has a larger display that can show more information, a temperature sensor that can be purchased separate, and some cool new AI tricks.
Google Nest Learning Thermostat hasn’t had an update in a long time, but that’s all about to change.
Google shared details about the upcoming Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) refresh in a pre-release call with Lifewire. The new Nest Learning Thermostat is getting the first refresh it’s had in about 9 years, according to the company. That includes a new domed crystal display that’s 60 percent larger than previous generations.
The display is also equipped with Dynamic Farsight, which senses when you’re near and lights up the display. Now, you can even customize what you’ll see on the display with information like time, temperature, weather, or outdoor air quality.
Google’s Gemini is also built into the Nest Learning Thermostat and can help you create a new Smart Schedule by automatically adjusting the temperature based on how you use the device over time. You’ll also receive notifications if Gemini thinks a change to your schedule is warranted, which you can choose to accept or reject.
The new Nest Learning Thermostat also has some environmental features that can help you save money. For example, the thermostat can adjust indoor temperatures according to how outdoor conditions affect heating and cooling. If it’s sunny outside during the winter and your home will heat up on its own, Nest can pause heating for a little while to save energy.
Google has also expanded the equipment the Nest Learning Thermostat will work with. This includes additional connections that let your Nest integrate things like built-in air purifiers or humidity equipment. Your new Nest Thermostat will also come with a separate temperature sensor, and additional sensors can be purchased separately.
The Nest Temperature Sensor has a pebble-like form that you can place on a shelf or table or hang on the wall in rooms that can be hot or cold spots in your home. You can add up to 6 additional sensors with a Nest Thermostat, and using the Nest app, you can set up temperatures that are average across all the sensors or set up cooling or heating zoons that adjust your home’s temperature according to those zones.
You can order the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) in the Google Store now, with general availability scheduled for August 20. The Nest Learning Thermostat comes with one Nest Temperature Sensor for $280. Additional Nest Temperature Sensors are available for $40 for a single sensor or $100 for a three-pack.
