TikTok Live is a real-time, often informal stream used by brands and influencers to connect with their audiences. In recent years, live broadcasts have become increasingly popular on apps like Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat, following in the design of platforms such as Twitch that aim to bring creators and fans closer together. The format allows viewers to ask questions and engage with the host in the moment.
To go live on TikTok, the host must have a minimum of 1,000 followers and be at least 16 years old. There is also a feature on TikTok Live that lets viewers send virtual presents to the host that can be redeemed for cash, though the host must be at least 18 years old to take part in this perk. Once a host starts a broadcast, their followers are notified and can join the broadcast, send gifts, and comment on the live-stream.
The Steps For Going Live On TikTok
To begin a live TikTok broadcast, open the TikTok app and tap the plus sign (+) centrally placed at the bottom of the screen. Swipe left on the camera menu until ‘Live‘ appears, and select it. Add a title and tap ‘Go Live‘ to start the live broadcast. That’s all. Followers will then be notified and start joining the stream, so hosts should make sure they’re ready to be seen.
During the live-stream, hosts can access additional features like flipping the camera, filtering comments, and adding moderators by tapping the vertically-placed three dots. The latter two options allow hosts to minimize the risk of harassment by blocking comments entirely, or banning certain keywords or phrases. Hosts can also add effects like filters to a Live stream within this menu. Once finished, just tap the X in the top-left corner to wrap things up. This will end the TikTok Live stream.
Accessing TikTok Live With Under 1,000 Followers
As previously mentioned, there are certain requirements that must be met in order to use TikTok’s live broadcast feature. Users must have at least 1,000 followers and be at least 16 years old — and 18 to accept gifts. However, if a user lacks the follower count, they can contact TikTok support to enable the Live feature for their account.
To go about this, tap the TikTok profile tab and select the three horizontal lines in the top right corner. Next, select the option ‘Report a problem‘ and then choose ‘I can’t start a TikTok LIVE.’ When asked ‘Is your problem resolved?‘ select ‘No.’ This will then redirect to a page to input feedback. In the ‘Send us your feedback‘ box, explain the request. Hit send and wait for TikTok support to respond. It usually takes anywhere from 1 to 3 days. Although this might not work, it can increase the chances of going live.
