Grab your boots, winter coat and work gloves and head up to Hume Lake this Saturday to do your good deed for Earth Month.
Sequoia National Forest rangers and managers are asking the public for volunteers to help with trash cleanup at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hume Lake. Volunteers are invited to meet at the Powder Can Day-Use area for a quick safety briefing and volunteer signup.
This year the snowpack above Hume Lake is providing managers with an ideal window to drain the lake and refill it before the scorching summer months arrive.
Volunteers are encouraged to dress warm and wear appropriate shoes for walking through the mud, over rocks and around pine cones. Experts recommend using the “buddy system” for this volunteer cleanup activity. The muck will be thick and it is a good plan to have someone close by to lend a hand should you become stuck, rangers said.
A mid-week storm will likely leave snow on the ground in the area. However, the weekend weather is predicted to be cold and clear, which rangers say is ideal for this volunteer cleanup day.
