Kia isn’t the only Korean brand that has been selling well this year. Based on the latest figures, Hyundai Motor America (HMA) reported record-breaking October sales of 71,802 units, representing an 18% increase compared to last year. Year-to-date figures show that HMA has moved 682,296 units so far, or a 4% increase compared to the same period last year.

Hyundai Motor Company was founded in 1967 by Chung Ju-yung, 20 years after the birth of the Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company. The automotive marque’s first model was the Cortina, birthed with the help of Ford in 1968, while its first self-developed car arrived the year after as the Pony. Since then, the company has found success with affordable cars and has consistently become known for reliability and value. Nowadays, its ventures vary from combustion, hybrid, all-electric, and hydrogen mobility solutions to robotics.

Hyundai’s top performers in the US during the first ten months of 2024 are a mixed-bag. The Elantra N saw a whopping 373% increase, while the Santa Fe hybrid was up by 136%. The Tucson rose 5%, and its electrified variant hit a new high with a 140% jump, marking October as the best month ever for Tucson hybrid sales. Overall, HMA’s hybrid vehicle sales surged by 91%.
Renaissance Of Family Sedans
Hyundai is one of the automakers in the US that keeps family sedans alive. We’re talking about the Hyundai Sonata, and HMA has sold 54,730 units of it so far. In October, the automaker sold 6,300 units of the midsize sedan, a 156% difference compared to the same month last year. With three powertrain options on offer and a radically revised design, the Sonata is proving to be popular, though it’s far from reaching the Camry’s status as the best-selling car in America.

Hyundai’s Outliers In The US
While HMA’s sales performance in the US from January to October 2024 has been mostly stellar, there are still outliers that maybe the automaker needs to focus on. The Santa Cruz appears to continue its decline in popularity, especially when compared to its tight rival, the Ford Maverick, with the Korean compact truck showing a 13% drop in YTD numbers.
