Lexus has recorded an outstanding full-year sales figure in 2024 – the best-ever in its 35 years of selling cars in the US. Just like its more pedestrian sibling, Toyota, Lexus again dominated the premium Japanese car segment, with Acura and Infiniti as its competitors. Worse, the luxury marque sold so well, it’s the only one among the three to post sales growth – up by 7.9% versus 2023 – all thanks to the RX Hybrid and Lexus’ massive push for hybrid models.

With the introduction of the LX Hybrid, all Lexus models in the US now come with available hybrid options. Lexus moved a total of 123,035 electrified vehicles in the US, including the full-electric RZ. That’s more than a third of the automaker’s full 2024 sales, recorded at 345,669 units. The RX led in both overall and electrified numbers, standing out as Lexus’ cash cow.

Acura & Infiniti Tanked 2024
In contrast to Lexus’ strategy, Acura and Infiniti dropped their previous hybrid offerings with no clear signs of the future just yet. The lack of hybrid options and decreasing lineup population spelled trouble for Acura and Infiniti, with the former selling only 132,367 units and the latter moving 58,070. Both brands posted at least a 9.2% decline in sales compared to last year.

Reliability Showdown: Acura vs Infiniti
Acura and Infiniti are both known to be reliable luxury sub-brands, running neck and neck in the J.D. Power reliability rankings.
Acura previously announced that it would skip hybrids and go straight to EVs, which manifested in the ZDX, but the newest model to join its lineup in 2025 will be the ADX, practically the crossover version of the ICE-powered Integra. Infiniti is far from introducing a new fully-electric model, except through the preview of the Vision Qe Concept, though it might take the fight to the Lexus RX with a new QX65 and an electrified crossover.
Acura ZDX Versus Lexus RZ
Right now, Acura has a fighting chance against Lexus in terms of its battery-electric vehicle. The Acura ZDX, which reached customers this year, isn’t far from the popularity of the Lexus RZ, with the former moving 7,391 units versus the latter’s 9,697. It remains to be seen whether the matchup between these fully-electric models will become tighter this year, though Lexus has already struck first blood by introducing more affordable variants and then ultimately cutting the RZ’s price tag by a significant amount.
