Mazda has issued multiple recalls for it’s most recent larger SUVs, the two-row CX-70 and the three-row CX-90. The recalls include both gas-only powered vehicles and hybrids, and will be fixed with free software updates at a Mazda dealership. Some of the vehicles will need multiple updates to cover the three possible problems, some of which could cause safety issues including a loss of drive. The bulkiest issue, covering over 80,000 of the recalled vehicles, is related to the dashboard’s electrical supply unit (ESU) and appears to only affect hybrid models. It can cause the defroster, seatbelt warning system, 360-degree camera system, and the battery’s high-voltage cooling system to not work properly.
Two More Serious Recalls
The other two recalls affect fewer vehicles, but have the larger safety concern. On the second recall, it’s stated that the powertrain control module and engine control module on both drivetrains can malfunction and cause a loss of drive power. Like the ESU, both modules can be reprogrammed at a Mazda dealership.

Another recall affects around 15,000 models. A problem with the power inverter software can cause glitching warning lights on the dashboard and loss of drive power in EV mode. Then, yet another issue is in the battery energy control module software and can cause the engine to fail to restart after the stop-start function engages. Again, a software update will fix the problem.
It Could Be Worse
The recalls are filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US. Owners will be notified by the end of December, and the software updated free of charge. The CX-70 and CX-90 are Mazda’s latest SUVs and are, essentially, the same vehicle with different seating configurations and offered with either a gas-only and hybrid drivetrain based around a new straight-six cylinder engine. Thankfully, while that’s a lot of issues for vehicles to have at once, they are purely software based, so they can be addressed reasonably quickly once a fix is available. Things are worse at Ford and Stellantis, with the former recently filing four recalls in a single day and the latter suffering one of the biggest recalls of the year a few months ago.
