The Memphis Grizzlies started the 2024-25 season with a road win.
Memphis (1-0) jumped out to an early lead against the Utah Jazz (0-1) on Wednesday in Salt Lake City, but the Jazz fought back and made it a competitive game down the stretch. The Grizzlies ultimately made enough plays in the final minutes to earn an encouraging 126-124 win.
Zach Edey had a rough NBA debut, fouling out early in the fourth quarter with five points and five rebounds. Ja Morant was excellent in his return to the court — his first regular-season action since Jan. 5 — with 22 points, 10 assists and five rebounds. Santi Aldama had a strong shooting night, hitting 5-of-10 3-pointers and finishing with 27 points.
Lauri Markkanen had 35 points to lead all scorers.
The Grizzlies are back in action on Friday night when they face the Rockets (0-1) in Houston.
Edey fouled out in the fourth quarter after he was limited throughout the game because of foul trouble. He finished with five points and five rebounds in his NBA debut.
Utah went on a run to start the quarter and made it a competitive game. The Grizzlies still have the lead going into the fourth quarter thanks to a strong quarter from Desmond Bane and more scoring from Aldama.
The Grizzlies have an 11-point lead at the half. Aldama has 15 points to lead the Grizzlies, while Markkanen has 16 to lead Utah. Memphis is 12-of-26 from 3-point range, while the Jazz are just 2-of-10.
Aldama has now made 4-of-6 attempts from beyond the arc, and he leads the Grizzlies with 12 points. Morant has nine points, four assists and four rebounds. The Grizzlies lead 54-42 with 3:09 to play in the first half.
Aldama leads all scorers with nine points, while Ja Morant has seven. Collin Sexton and Lauri Markkanen each have six to lead Utah.
The other Grizzlies rookie who will see action tonight is Wells, and he began his NBA career by making his first two 3-point attempts.
Edey scored on a putback for his first NBA points. The Jazz took a 12-11 lead at the first timeout of the game. Santi Aldama connected on a pair of 3-pointers in the early going and leads the Grizzlies with six points.
Grizzlies first starting lineup of 2024-25 includes Zach Edey
With Jaren Jackson Jr. out, the Grizzlies will start Ja Morant, Marcus Smart, Desmond Bane, Santi Aldama and Zach Edey.
