A fan with knowledge of the Pokemon universe puts together an impressive world map, with each game’s region replacing the real location it’s based on.
A Pokemon fan recently put together an impressive map of the franchise’s universe, with each region standing in for its real-life counterpart. Every new mainline Pokemon entry to date has taken players to a brand-new region filled with new creatures to collect, cities and other landmarks to explore, and various Trainers and Gym Leaders to challenge in the quest to become the reigning champion of said region’s Pokemon League.
Many of these fictional Pokemon regions are inspired by countries in the real world, with the most recent example being Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Paldea, a stand-in for the Iberian Peninsula in the southwest of Europe. Other notable regions include Alola, Pokemon Sun and Moon’s take on Hawaii; Unova, the setting of Pokemon Black and White that was reportedly modeled after New York; and Sinnoh, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl’s home region that was inspired by the Japanese island of Hokkaido. The ancient past of the Pokemon world has also been explored in prequel games like Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which depicted Sinnoh as a feudal land named Hisui.
A Reddit user by the handle of HazakunaJr recently made a map of the Pokemon universe, which they shared on r/pokemon. Using the real world’s countries as a basis, this map places each region in the section of the globe that they were made to represent. For example, the original Kanto region from Pokemon Red and Blue and Johto from Pokemon Gold and Silver are placed in Japan alongside Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire’s Hoenn region, Galar from the Pokemon Sword and Shield games is placed in the United Kingdom, and Kalos of Pokemon X and Y fame replaces France.
Fanmade Map Shows How the Pokemon World Mirrors Our Own
In addition to the regions themselves, HazakunaJr’s fanmade Pokemon map lists several key locations like the various Gyms and Pokemon Leagues that serve as objectives for players in each mainline entry. Other landmarks include the Blueberry Academy in the ocean just outside Unova, Galar’s Crown Tundra and Isle of Armor, and the massive Great Crater of Paldea that stands at the center of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s game world. There are also icons of the many powerful Legendary Pokemon that can be encountered and captured in each region.
All throughout the comment section of HazakunaJr’s post, other users have complimented their fanmade map for accurately comparing the ever-expanding Pokemon universe to the real world and suggested other landmarks that could have been added. There is also some speculation about where the next mainline Pokemon game could take place, but in the meantime the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Z-A will take fans back to the Kalos region’s Lumiose City for a futuristic urban adventure.
