Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 SoC brings faster performance, improved efficiency, and better AI-processing to mid-range smartphones.
Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 mobile SoC comes with a host of improvements over the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. Qualcomm is one of the leading mobile chipmakers in the world, with most leading Android vendors like Samsung and OnePlus using the company’s 8-series chipsets in their respective flagship smartphones. However, the company faces steep competition in the mid-range market, where Taiwan’s MediaTek rules the roost with its Dimensity-branded offerings.
The Snapdragon 7-series chips are aimed largely at the premium mid-range market and come with a series of high-end features that offer great bang for the buck. The latest SoC is no different, as it offers a slew of features that belie its mid-range credentials. Starting off with the CPU, the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 comes with a 1+3+4 core configuration that includes 1x Cortex-X2 core running at 2.91GHz, 3x Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.49GHz, and 4x Cortex A510 cores chugging along at 1.8GHz. Qualcomm claims it offers over 50 percent improvement in performance compared to its predecessor, while improving power efficiency by up to 13 percent.
Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 Specs And Features
The new chip comes with an unspecified Adreno GPU with Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, such as Auto Variable Rate Shading that renders content in focus at full resolution and the background in lower resolution for enhanced performance and efficiency. Another notable graphics-related technology is Volumetric Rendering that adds realism to games with particle graphics like fog and smoke. Qualcomm claims that the graphics chip will offer 2x the performance of its predecessor.
The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 features an 18-bit Triple ISP that supports up to 200-megapixel image capture and staggered HDR video capture. Qualcomm claims the new chip will help shoot better photos and videos with improved dynamic range, and it should also capture brighter images with less noise in low-light situations. The chip also features the Hexagon DSP with the integrated Qualcomm AI Engine that the company claims offers up to 2x better AI performance than the last-gen chip. It also uses a technology called AI Super Resolution that can upscale game scenes or photos from 1080p to 4K.
The Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 supports LPDDR5 memory running at 3200MHz. The new SoC also has an integrated Snapdragon X62 cellular modem that offers up to 4.4Gbps download speeds, thanks to 5G NR sub-6 and mmWave support. Other connectivity features include Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth v5.3. Commercial devices with the Snapdragon 7+Gen 2 will start hitting the market in March, starting with Redmi and Realme smartphones.
