Sony’s New PlayStation5 Pro wasn’t released with exclusive games or other benefits, just better hardware.
Everything is getting more expensive, even the new PlayStation5 Pro that Sony announced today.
The gaming community has hotly anticipated the release of the new PlayStation console, but after the details of the PS5 Pro were announced, many seemed to feel like Sony is taking more than it’s giving. The PS5 Pro has an upgraded GPU that enables “45 percent faster rendering for gameplay,” according to Sony. It also gained Advanced Ray Tracing and AI-drive upscaling with PlayStations’s Spectral Super Resolution and a 2TB SSD. So, game graphics will look better, and you’ll have more storage, but the price jumped to a throat-clogging $700.
What it didn’t get seems to be a lot more important in this release. There is no disc drive. If you want one, you’ll have to purchase it separately. There is no stand. That also has to be purchased separately. There are also no PS5 Pro exclusive games, and many gamers don’t see the point in upgrading when the PS5 console will play all the same games.
“I don’t use disks all that often, but they’re a lifesaver when I do. I avoided the digital version of the original on purpose,” said Reddit user kingdazy on a thread announcing the new console. “I can’t see myself paying more for less. yes, I understand that the new… GPU and mem upgrades are nice, but I’ll have to see some real world reviews of these improvements being mind blowing before I’d consider getting this.
In the same thread, another Reddit user, goneanddoneitagain said, “I’m going to be honest, had they shown some upcoming first-party PS5 exclusives alongside this, it would have been received much better. The price would still hurt, but at least you can see a reason to want to buy it.”
Still, there are some, like Digital Trends’ Jacob Roach, who believe the console is worth the asking price. Ultimately, it probably comes down to why you want the new console. At least, until new PS5 Pro-exclusive games start popping up. Then, depending on the game, $700 might not seem like such a bad asking price.
