Donald Trump’s selection of scandal-plagued Matt Gaetz to be his attorney general continues to cause a stir in Washington as Speaker Mike Johnson has said that he will request that the House Ethics Committee not release its report into allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use made against the former Florida Congressman.
Meanwhile, Robert F Kennedy Jr has been branded “dangerous” and “unserious” by Democratic Senator Ed Markey after the president-elect announced he had picked vaccine-skeptic and conspiracy theorist to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
Former Vice President Mike Pence has also spoken out over the choice, given Kennedy’s stance on abortion.
RFK Jr is just one of a string of controversial picks for the future cabinet, including veteran and Fox News contributor Pete Hegseth as defense secretary, Tulsi Gabbard as director of national intelligence, and billionaire Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy as the joint leaders of a new Department of Government Efficiency.
RFK Jr, Gaetz, Musk, and other cabinet picks flocked to Mar-a-Lago on Thursday night to see the president-elect speak publicly for the first time since winning the election.
Trump also announced North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum as his nominee to lead the Department of the Interior.

Despite naming economy and inflation as top election concerns, Americans continue to spend
Americans stepped up their spending at retailers last month in the latest sign that healthy consumer spending is driving the economy’s steady growth.
Retail sales rose 0.4% from September to October, the Commerce Department said Friday, a solid increase though less than the previous month’s robust 0.8% gain.
A 1.6% jump in sales at auto dealers drove much of the gain. Purchases climbed 2.3% at electronics and appliances stores and 0.7% at restaurants and bars. Though some of October’s rise in retail sales reflected higher prices, it mainly indicated increased purchases.

‘I understand the MAGA movement’: Democrat Dean Phillips says he would serve in Trump administration
Democratic Rep Dean Phillips of Minnesota, who mounted a primary bid against President Joe Biden earlier this year, told NewsNation’s Leland Vittert that he would be open to joining Donald Trump’s administration if his skill set was useful.
“Anyone should consider that. If we come to a point where no Democrat would want to serve in a Republican administration, we’re limiting ourselves,” Philips said.
“I’m not a big fan of the president himself, but I understand the MAGA movement.”

COMMENT: Trump putting anti-vaxxer RFK Jr in charge of health should come with a ‘risk to life’ warning
Sean O’Grady asks if Robert F Kennedy Jr hadn’t launched his presidential campaign – and if Trump hadn’t co-opted him and his share of the vote – would anyone really have chosen to make this crank responsible for the lives and health of the American people?
