If you can figure out how to phrase what you’re looking for, now you can generate a playlist for just about anything.
If you’ve ever wanted a specific playlist to match a mood, activity, or theme, then Spotify’s AI Playlist generator is a tool you’ll probably appreciate.
In a blog post on Sunday, Spotify announced the beta for AI Playlist, an AI capability available to Spotify Premium subscribers that lets you “turn your most creative ideas into playlists.” The beta will initially be available in the UK and Australia. To create a new playlist, all you need to do is type a prompt and the AI will pull songs that match what you’ve typed.
Spotify suggested the following examples: “‘an indie folk playlist to give my brain a big warm hug,’ ‘relaxing music to tide me over during allergy season,’ or ‘a playlist that makes me feel like the main character.'” But you could use any prompt that suits what you’re looking for, including songs about animals, places, movie characters, and more.
If you’re in one of the areas where the Playlist AI beta is available, you’ll be able to find it in your Library when you tap the + button to create a new playlist. There you should see the AI Playlist option. Follow the prompts, and once the playlist is finished generating, then you can “revise and refine” it to your tastes by giving the AI additional prompts.
There are a few restrictions, however. Spotify says, “While it’s designed to be fun, the tool is still in beta and won’t produce results for non-music-related prompts, like current events or specific brands. We also have measures in place around prompts that are offensive—so please prompt responsibly!”
As for wider availability, Spotify didn’t mention when other areas might become available or a timeline for when the feature might come out of beta. However, the company did say, “Over the coming months, we look forward to continuing to iterate on this new feature to best serve our listeners.”
