The Security Service of Ukraine has detained an FSB asset who is believed to have been passing on data to the Russians revealing the defense positions and maneuvers of Ukrainian troops in Donetsk region.
That’s according to the SBU press office, Ukrinform reports.
The suspect is a 38-year-old resident of Toretsk, who at the outset of the full-scale war moved to Vinnytsia region to register as an internally displaced person. It is then when she was recruited by the FSB.
To obtain intelligence from the Eastern Front, the woman exploited her nephew who was oblivious of her malign intentions. Her relative was a contracted soldier on AVOL who was hiding from law enforcement in the town of Toretsk.
According to the SBU, during everyday phone calls, the suspect would enquire from the nephew information about the current locations of Ukraine’s defenders and the consequences of Russian strikes.
She would then pass the data over to her Russian handler via a messenger, deleting her correspondence after each such session.
“Feeling the inevitability of prosecution, the perpetrator moved to Kirovohrad region, where she decided to lay low, ceasing all communication with the FSB. This didn’t help the suspect as SBU operatives located and detained her at the new address in a rented apartment,” the report says.
As noted, during a search of the detainee’s home, a mobile phone was seized, holding evidence of her cooperation with Russian intelligence.
According to the inquiry, the suspect came into the FSB’s sights as she left pro-Kremlin comments in Telegram chats.
The perpetrator is now in custody, facing up to 12 years in prison.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, the SBU detained an FSB asset in Odesa, who had been spying on warships deployed on combat duty in Ukraine’s Black Sea waters.
