Vietnamese automaker VinFast has begun deliveries of the VF8 in the United States. Here’s what buyers can expect from the electric SUV.
The VinFast VF8 is now being delivered to customers in the U.S., and here are all the details about the new electric SUV. Last November, Vietnamese automaker VinFast marked its first international export which comprised 999 VF8 EVs destined for the U.S. market. The company has built on that feat by striking a global vehicle connectivity deal with T-Mobile, launching its online U.S. community, and opening four on-site stores in California.
The two-row VF8 SUV starts from $59,000. Since it’s made in Vietnam, the EV doesn’t qualify for a tax credit. However, VinFast recently received approval to build a manufacturing plant in North Carolina, suggesting that future units may become eligible for a rebate. The SUV comes in two variants — Eco and Plus. Both editions feature the same wheelbase (161 inches), battery capacity (87.7 kWh), charging speed (from 10 percent to 70 percent in under 31 minutes), and two electric motors. While the Eco variant delivers up to 348 horsepower, buyers of the Plus max out at 402 hp. VinFast says the VF8 can do the 0 to 60 mph sprint in 5.5 seconds. The VinFast SUV comes with a predicted range estimate of 293 miles, though the EPA is yet to confirm this.
VinFast VF8: Interiors, Charging, & Safety
Coming to the interiors, the VinFast VF8 features leather seats and a panoramic sunroof. It also features an adjustable ambient lighting system, a heated steering wheel, and an intelligent monitoring system that identifies and personalizes the driver’s experience based on their needs.
VinFast equips the VF8 with a 15.6-inch touchscreen that not only serves entertainment and navigation purposes, but enables users to easily access Smart Services like remote vehicle control and Wi-Fi hotspot. OTA software updates are provided, and drivers can say “Hey VinFast” to activate the EV’s voice assistance system for navigation assistance or information about tire pressure. Drivers can easily access vehicle data, schedule a service appointment, or even remotely control the vehicle by using the VinFast C-app.
Each VF8 purchase comes with a portable charger which is quite slow. However, drivers can get the VinFast home connector and add more miles in less time. The charger supports speeds of up to 48A. Drivers can remotely control the charger and receive regular software updates that improve performance and introduce new features. VinFast recommends Qmerit for Level 2 charger installation services. EV owners can monitor energy consumption and remotely start/stop charging through the VinFast smartphone app. The app is available for both Android and iOS devices.
Drivers can conveniently charge on the go at compatible Level 2 and DC fast charging stations. Regarding driver autonomy, the VF8 has a suite of driver assistance and safety features like highway driving assist, auto lane-change assist, cruise assist, and collision warning. Other notable functionalities include active self-parking, automatic emergency braking, and smart summon which Tesla also offers as part of its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving packages. The VinFast VF8 can be pre-ordered for $200 today.
