It seems Volkswagen finally made up its mind about the ID.7. Since its release in Europe in 2023, the company has been going back and forth about whether it would bring the electric liftback sedan to the United States. Even as late as last October, it seemed the company was struggling to decide. Today, it has come out that the ID.7 will not make the trip across the ocean to American VW dealers. While it might not have been a huge success, it does make the company’s calendar of electric releases look even more barren.

Volkswagen Cites The Wonky EV Market
The cancellation was first reported by The Drive, and a Volkswagen representative confirmed to us that the ID.7 wouldn’t be sold, here. He also provided the following statement:
“Due to the ongoing challenging EV climate, Volkswagen has decided to no longer offer the ID.7 to the North American market.
Despite this, electric vehicles continue to be a core part of Volkswagen’s long-term product strategy, and new electric models will continue to be introduced for this market.
We are encouraged by the enthusiastic reception of the ID. Buzz that was introduced late last year, and the strong ID.4 sales in January to date.”
It seems the company is referencing how EV adoption, while not stopping altogether, has not been happening at the rate many companies were anticipating. Plus, additional roadblocks may appear from the Trump administration, which has made it clear it doesn’t want to support the EV industry through tax credits or other benefits.
We also must admit that, while VW could likely use more EV offerings, the large and potentially somewhat pricey ID.7 sedan likely wouldn’t have moved the needle much. VW hasn’t had much luck with large and premium sedans in recent years. The most recent of which, the Arteon, never seemed to find much of a market. Plus, the broader car market is more interested in SUVs, rather than cars.
Volkswagen Doesn’t Have Many EVs On The Horizon
We recently went over how VW is lacking in new EVs for the near future. In the U.S., we figured the ID.7 would help fill in some space until the Scout truck brand launches in 2027. Now it seems even that won’t liven up dealer lots. It does at least have the Buzz finally reaching dealers, and the ID.4 has been updated yet again, and VW is offering tempting deals. Whether the updates are enough to turn around flagging ID.4 sales is another question. Last year, ID.4 sales were down by 55% compared to 2023. We’re hoping that, for VW’s sake, there are some plans to make some big changes to ID.4 in a couple years to keep it fresh, as well as maybe a model or two they haven’t talked about. The company has hinted at something coming around 2026. Time is of the essence, as the ID.4 is already showing some age, and will have been on the market for 7 years when Scouts launch in 2027. We may see a GTI version of the production ID.2all, but odds are, it won’t appear in the U.S. until sometime after those Scouts, at which point both the ID.4 and ID. Buzz will really be old.
