Key Takeaways
- Lucid Air Sapphire sets a new record for production sedans with 8.930-second quarter-mile time.
- Achieves 0-60 mph in 1.77 seconds with 1.5 G acceleration.
- Rimac Nevera remains the EV acceleration king.
It’s no secret that the Lucid Air Sapphire is one rapid machine that can even blitz the Model S Plaid and Bugatti Chiron in a drag race, but now, a customer-owned example has taken things to the next level, breaking a world record for the world’s quickest sedan, covering the quarter-mile in a mere 8.930 seconds.
The Air Sapphire, driven by Brooks Weisblat of Drag Times, was consistently quick on the prepped drag surface. According to the Dragy software, 0-60 mph was completed in just 1.92 seconds, while the quarter-mile was done and dusted in 8.94 seconds, hitting the trap sensors at a speed of 154.85 mph. Add in a rollout, as manufacturers typically do, and the numbers look even more impressive.
Record-Breaking Performance
“Not only did we set the record for the world’s quickest production sedan down the quarter-mile with an 8.930, we also hit 60 mph in 1.77 seconds with the standard one-foot rollout,” said Weisblat. During the launch, the Sapphire pulled an incredible 1.5 G of acceleration, and if that doesn’t sound like much, allow us to put that into perspective.

The Tesla cheats slightly, but the race is still entertaining.
A commercial plane generates 0.4 G during take-off, and many high-end supercars achieve between 0.8-1 G. While early EVs were critiqued for their inability to repeat performance, no such problems exist for the best OEMs in the business – on a second pass, the Sapphire performs just as well, despite using about 3% of its battery charge. It also clocked a 1.39-second 60-foot time – astonishing.
Fastest Customer-Driven Lucid Air Sapphire
The times achieved here are believed to be the fastest of any customer-driven Lucid Air Sapphire to date. That’s remarkable because media-driven quarter-mile times have had Lucid engineers on site, who say they can infinitely tweak the powertrain to maximize traction for any conditions. Without them on hand, this is evidence of the final customer specification cars being tuned beautifully. Remember, a sub-8-second time was achieved on the very first run with absolutely no tire squeal (except when doing burnouts).
This is an incredible achievement for a production vehicle, let alone one that can carry four passengers in comfort. The only vehicles faster than this are heavily modified, like the 8.5-second 1,400-hp Lamborghini Huracán STO, or are purpose-built hypercars, like the record-breaking Rimac Nevera. Soon, the Air Sapphire will take on both the Model S Plaid and Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170. We can’t wait to see what comes of that.
