Porsche is testing its electric 718 Boxster at the Nürburgring once again. The EV Boxster models are flying around the ‘Ring in near silence, as Porsche gets its first electric sports cars ready to go on sale by pushing it around one of the most demanding tracks in the world.

As strange as it might be to see a Porsche going that quickly and that quietly, it still gets our hearts racing. It also shows off more of the new styling details with Porsche uncovering a little bit more than the last time the 718s were caught on tape at the track.
Electric 718 Looks Production Ready
This prototype looks almost identical to the one we spotted in March. That means that this is probably as close to production as we’re going to get before the official reveal which is expected to happen early in 2025.
Like every current Porsche, the 983-generation 718 Boxster EV gets four pin-prick running lights that turn orange during turn signal time. They’ll also have a thin LED rear light. The fun detail is the third brake light, which is aligned parallel to the body instead of perpendicular, running up the rear cover like a bright red shark fin.

The 718 EV gets active air flaps in its two front air intakes. We’ve seen them already in the closed position during winter testing but now you can see them open, sucking in air to keep important components like the inverter, battery, and brakes cool.
At the back, the rear bumper on these Porsches still looks a bit strange. It’s probably because they have what looks like it was meant to be a pair of tailpipe cutouts that aren’t cut out. This one might not be the final design quite yet. That or Porsche has some strange new aerodynamic trick planned.
No One-Pedal Drive And Possible Gas Version
We know the 718 won’t have one-pedal driving. Porsche has made that clear with the Taycan EV and recently stated it again for the 718. The German automaker wants to keep the proper feel of a functioning brake pedal for driving enjoyment.
Porsche hasn’t spoken about power or battery range for the new EVs, but we have heard reports of possible problems in that area. A report last week said that the cells for the 718 were to come from troubled battery supplier Northvolt, and that could cause some headaches.

The sports car company also recently said that gas engines were possible for its new EVs. On an investor call, CFO Lutz Meschke said that customers are still trending to gas and that Porsche had the flexibility to add combustion engines to the new 718 as well as the Macan EV.
Porsche had planned to keep building the old gas 718 alongside the EV, so this could mean one more generation of the gas car and continued improvements.
Expect Porsche to reveal the 718 Boxster and Cayman EVs in 2025. Production should start later in the year at the automaker’s plant in Zuffenhausen.
