Riley Testut’s Delta Nintendo console emulator is coming to the iPad, and we cannot wait.
Delta, which lets you run your own copies of Nintendo (and Sega Genesis) console games on your iPhone, will soon also be available on the iPad. This is after years of Apple’s blanket ban on game emulators. Who knows why Apple barred emulators in the first place, but the result of the reversal is that the iPad might now be just about the best portable games console around.
“The iPad’s advantage is its generous display size, which allows for an immersive gaming experience. This becomes more significant for retro titles that were originally designed for larger screens,” Lucas Wyland, founder of gaming site Steambase, told Lifewire via email.
The Story So Far
The whole Delta saga has been a rollercoaster ride. When Delta developer Testut tried to launch an official version of his Alt Store in the EU, enabled thanks to Europe’s new DMA laws that have compelled Apple to open up iOS to third party stores, Apple dawdled in approving it.
Then, realizing that game emulators would be a huge draw for alternative app stores, one that might end up with people realizing that getting apps from other sources isn’t the dangerous nightmare Apple likes to pretend, Apple suddenly made game emulators “legal” in its own App Store. And not just in Europe, but worldwide, cutting off competition before it could begin. Then, a few days later, it finally let Testut launch the Alt Store. He also put Delta in the official App Store.
That went well, with Delta topping the charts around the world. And now, the iPad version is about to launch. While the iPhone is spiritually a perfect successor to the Game Boy series, I’d argue that, as a retro gaming console, the iPad is even better.
Retro Console
The iPad is terrible for holding in your hands and playing. It’s just too big. So don’t do it that way. Instead, enjoy its amazing bright and colorful screen, its excellent speakers, and its all-day battery life. The iPad can be used with many game controllers, probably including some you already have. You can pair it via Bluetooth and play those old games full-screen. What’s more, the iPad’s screen ratio is much squarer than wide-screen TVs or MacBooks, making it much better suited for old games designed for 4:3 CRT televisions.
The iPhone works really well for old Game Boy games, but if you want to play old arcade games, or titles for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis (aka Mega Drive), you’ll enjoy them more on a larger screen.
And it doesn’t stop there. If your iPad is running iOS 17, then it can be used as a screen for your regular consoles. I have used mine with a Nintendo Switch, and with the right adapters, you can hook it up to your Xbox or PlayStation, or anything else. In this case, you can even use your AirPods for audio, with such low latency (audio delay) that it’s not noticeable in most games.
Or how about playing triple-A Xbox and PS titles directly on the iPad? Well, kind of—thanks to game streaming, you can play these games on pretty much any device with an internet connection. And thanks to another slackening of its rules, Apple now allows game streaming on mobile.
“If your internet connection is strong enough, the Playstation App allows you to turn on and “remote play” your PlayStation from home anywhere in the world over wifi. Which is pretty remarkable,” Paul Santoro, vice president of gaming and esports at Heroic Game Day, told Lifewire via email.
Now that game emulators are permitted on the iPad, it’s starting to look like the go-to device for retro gaming fans, and it does all this in addition to playing existing iOS games. Plus of course it runs things like Logic Pro and lets you do your email. Yes, your laptop can do all this, but there’s something super cool about busting out just a screen and a controller and spending an afternoon playing Streets of Rage or Super Mario World.
