The new streaming device has a redesigned remote and can function as the hub for your smart home.
Lots of rumors have been flying around about Google’s new TV streaming device, and now we have confirmation on the design, some of the features, and the price.
Google shared details about the new 4K Google TV Streamer in a pre-release call with Lifewire, and the company is, in fact, calling it the Google TV Streamer. It will have a more streamlined appearance and look much less like the dongle that many people have become accustomed to. Google also took the time to redesign the remote so it’s more intuitive to use.
This includes making the remote longer, optimizing button placement so they’re where you expect them to be, and, surprisingly, a customizable button that lets you choose whether you want quick access to inputs, apps, or a shortcut to your Google Home panel. It also has Find My capabilities, which you can access by voice or by pushing a button on the side of the Google TV Streamer.
Of course, Gemini AI is built into the Google TV Streamer. Google’s AI can give you full summaries and reviews of the shows and movies that might interest you. It also provides season-by-season breakdowns of shows so you can pick up where you left off or plan for your next TV binge.
Google TV Streamer also offers a very Frame-like experience with Ambient Mode, which lets you use your photos as a screensaver, or use your voice with Gemini AI to create somethings that completely unique to you.
On the hardware side, the Google TV Streamer offers 32 Gb of storage, double the memory over previous generations of Chromecast, and a 22 percent faster CPU so you can download and flip through apps faster.
The most exciting new feature to me, however, is that the Google TV Streamer is equipped with a Threads border router that supports Matter technology, so it can act as your Smart Home Hub and display your Google Home panel right on your TV. This means that Matter devices can quickly connect to the Google TV Streamer and then you can access, view, and interact with those devices using your TV remote.
The Google TV Streamer will be available starting September 24 for $99.99.
