No more surprise nudes for your kids and yourself.
Nude photos are, sadly, a fact of life for anyone with a smartphone, but Meta wants to do something about it.
In a blog post Thursday, the Instagram owner revealed a new AI-powered tool that will detect nude photos and blur them. The tool will be enabled for anyone under 18 by default but can be turned on by anyone in Instagram’s settings.
Senders of nude photos will be given a reminder to be careful of who they’re sending nude photos to and also given the option to not send them if they change their mind.
Better yet, the images are processed on your own device, not Meta’s servers.
“Nudity protection uses on-device machine learning to analyze whether an image sent in a DM on Instagram contains nudity,” said Meta in the blog post. “Because the images are analyzed on the device itself, nudity protection will work in end-to-end encrypted chats, where Meta won’t have access to these images – unless someone chooses to report them to us.”
Meta is also adding sextortion protection. The company already removes accounts and prevents people engaging in sextortion activities from creating new ones. It also reports the activity to law enforcement. The company is now developing tech to identify accounts even sooner by using AI to watch for signals that are associated with sextortion behavior.
Any account suspected of this kind of behavior will have its messages relegated to the hidden requests folder when sending messages. The company will also send safety notices to people who are already talking to accounts that are suspected of sextortion, reminding them to report any threats to share private images, and to say no, even if it feels uncomfortable.
If the account is owned by a teen, the “message” button won’t even show up on accounts suspected of sextortion activity, even if they’re already chatting.
“We’re also testing hiding teens from these accounts in people’s follower, following and like lists, and making it harder for them to find teen accounts in Search results,” said Meta.
