New Apple Watch means new features, and this year’s no different: Series 10 has a bigger, brighter, and lighter watch that comes in new finishes and colors, too.
Another year, another Apple Watch version. This time, it’s Apple Watch Series 10, with a new form factor that’s thinner and lighter than previous models, a bigger, brighter display, and a new Titanium model.
Apple took to the virtual stage Monday to show off a host of new devices, focusing on Siri and AI, the iPhone 16 models, AirPods, and, last but not least, the new Apple Watch 10.
COO Jeff Williams came onto the stream to introduce the new Apple Watch Series 10, saying the new wearable has 30% more screen area than the Series 6 watches, a wider angle OLED display with 40% brighter pixels when viewed from an angle, and a wider aspect ratio. You can see an additional line of text in Messages and other apps, and there’s a new watch face called Flux that shows off the new once-per-second updates of the screen in always-on mode (vs the earlier Watch’s once-per-minute).
There’s a new finish for the aluminum version, too, called Jet Black. Williams called it the first-ever polished aluminum finish for Apple Watch. It’s a 30-step anodization process that bonds the dye to the housing at a molecular level and is polished using silicon nanoparticles.
There will continue to be Rose Gold and Silver Aluminum versions as well.
The Series 10, said Williams, is the thinnest Apple Watch Ever at 9.7 mm thick, which is 10% thinner than Series 9 watches. That means Apple had to make everything inside even smaller, including the chip, the Digital Crown, and the speakers, which are now 30% smaller than before with—Apple claims—no reduction in audio quality.
Williams noted that you can now play media directly through the Apple Watch speakers for the first time, too.
The Apple Watch Series 10 continues to have 50-meter water resistance, and it now includes a larger and more efficient charging coil with a promised 80% charge in 30 minutes.
The New Series 10 is 10% lighter than Series 9, said Williams, and now includes a Titanium model that replaces the stainless steel options. The new Titanium is 20% lighter than the earlier model, and it comes in Natural, Gold, and Slate Gray metallic finishes.
Complementing the new Titanium models are new Milanese Loop and Link bracelet bands.
Of course, there are new AI features on Apple Watch Series 10, too, as the S10 chip that powers the wearable’s double tap, auto workout detection, Siri, and crash and fall detection includes a new Neural Engine built right in.
That brings a new live translation app and health features like a new Vitals app and Sleep app features, like a (yet to be FDA-approved) Sleep Apnea detection feature. This feature will also be available on Series 9 and Ultra 2 Apple Watches.
Julz Arney, Director of Fitness Technologies at Apple, came on to talk about a new depth gauge and Ocianic Plus app that takes advantage of machine learning to show you your max depth, direction, and other metrics perfect for snorkeling.
The new Apple Watch Series 10 starts at $399 or $499 (for the GSM model) and is available for pre-order today. It will be available for real Sept 20.
The Apple team took a moment to show off a new finish for the Apple Watch Ultra 2, as well, called Satin Black, which uses a customized blasting process. It also revealed updated bands that match the black titanium hardware, the Milanese Loop, and a new scuba-diving-style link band. You can get this new Ultra 2 version pre-ordered today, starting at $799. It will also be available on Sept 20.
